Computer Science majors are allowed and encouraged to study abroad for a semester or a whole year. If you hope to study abroad, though it's best to start planning early.
Students in the department have recently studied abroad at:
- University of Melbourne, Australia
- AIT-Budapest, Budapest, Hungary
- ETH Zurich, Zurich Switzerland
- The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland
The Office of International Programs (OIP) manages study abroad programs. Your first step should be to meet with a study abroad adviser and fill out an advising application. The advisers will help you find a study abroad program that meets your needs and allows you to complete your coursework on schedule.
Brian Kernighan is the Director of Undergraduate Studies for study abroad. Schedule an appointment with him to review your plan and course information after talking with the Office of International Programs.
Some upper-level computer science courses are only offered during either the fall or spring, so going abroad can make fulfilling requirements more complicated. In general, both OIP and the Computer Science Department try to be as flexible as possible in approving your curriculum, but planning ahead is essential.
For classes of 2025 and beyond, you must take the five core courses at Princeton. Up to two study abroad courses can count as COS electives if approved.
If you have independent work requirements, you will need to find a faculty adviser at Princeton, either as the direct adviser or as someone to assess work done abroad. You must do this before the end of the previous semester. Deadlines are the same for students studying abroad. Please contact Mikki Hornstein, Independent Work Administrator, with any questions.
