Graduate students in the computer science department are assigned a first year academic adviser (who may or may not become their research adviser) to guide them in the process of selecting classes and help them navigate the program in general.
Master’s students who wish to remain in the MSE track (thesis track) should have a thesis adviser selected by the end of their first year to supervise their thesis. Doctoral students are expected to secure a research adviser by the end of their first academic year. Administrative staff can also help answer any questions about the graduate program.

Mentorship Program
The department offers first year graduate students the opportunity to be mentored by a senior graduate student in the department. The program is optional, but is a great way for incoming students to get guidance and advice from students who are more senior in the program. Incoming students should expect to receive an invitation soon after joining the program.
Communication channels
The department broadcasts news, announcements about the graduate program, and Master’s and Ph.D. fellowship opportunities on Slack. Incoming students should expect to receive an invitation soon after joining the program.
