Can Machines Become Conscious?
Join a neuroscientist and a philosopher as they explore the science of physical brain processes and conscious experience, and debate whether or not artificial intelligence can achieve true consciousness. Assuming that our conscious subjective experiences are an outcome of the material processes in our brains and bodies, and such processes can be replicated to create conscious machines, what would such AIs teach us about our own brains and minds?
Panelists:
is a Professor at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and studies the brain basis of consciousness. His lab is currently testing his mechanistic theory of awareness called the attention schema theory.
is a University Professor of Philosophy and Neural Science at NYU and co-director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Consciousness. In his philosophical writings, Chalmers has explored the possibility of machine consciousness.
Moderator:
is a freelance journalist and author who writes about physics, neuroscience and AI. His recent book is Why Machines Learn: The Elegant Math Behind Modern AI.
