Michael Li and Tamara Broderick win Marshall Scholarships
The Marshall Scholarship finances students of exceptional ability for two years of graduate study in any field at any institution in the United Kingdom. Among the 40 winners this year are Michael Li and Tamara Broderick.
Tianhui "Michael" Li, a senior computer science major from Portland, Oregon, is interested in studying classic and quantum information theory. For his junior project, he analyzed PageRank and other web search ranking algorithms with Kevin Wayne.
Tamara Broderick, a senior mathematics major from Cleveland, Ohio, plans to focus primarily on the intersection of probability theory, measure theory and machine learning. For her junior independent work, she worked on a machine-learning project with Rob Schapire to track animals in Panama.
Both plan to go to Cambridge University to study Part III of the Mathematicas Tripos, the oldest and most famous mathematics examination in the world.
